Location, location, location.

Girly Book Blog Hop ButtonAs you’ve probably figured out by now, most of my stories are set in North Carolina – mostly in a teeny little rural county called Chowan.

It’s a real place.

I swear.

I grew up there (but not that much. I’m 5’2″.).

Everything in my backlist is set there. In my contracted/yet-to-be-released titles, the only ones that are not set at least in part in Chowan are Saint and Scholar and Love by Premonition. Saint and Scholar is set somewhere in the NC Triangle (I’m purposefully vague about where because it’s set at a maybe-not-so-fictional university). Love by Premonition is set between Halifax County and The Triangle. So, still North Carolina.
Executive Decision by Holley TrentI’m querying one novel right now that’s actually set in WYOMING (!!!), but the heroine runs away home…to North Carolina.

I guess as far as location goes, I just write what I know. There’s something special about growing up in a small town setting and it imparts a certain gumption in all of my heroines (at least, I hope it does).

I’d love to introduce you to North Carolina as I know it, so one of you lucky ducks will win three of my Chowan stories: Reinstated Bond, Mrs. Roth’s Merry Christmas (I promise, it’s a year-round read), and Her Resident Jester (comes out on 2/1).Clean Slate by Holley Trent They’re fast reads with Mrs. Roth being the longest, so together they should keep you occupied for a day.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me 1) What ebook format you prefer, and 2) where the last book you read was set.

That’s it. Easy peasy!

I’ll announce the winner some time on 1/22.

When you’re done commenting here, don’t forget to move on to the next stop in the hop for a chance to win more great prizes! Enter to win the GRAND PRIZE package at Libby’s blog.

  1. I love your book covers, Holley! Well, I haven’t been to North Carolina so I’ll definitely have to travel through your books.

I love North Carolina. used to go to Raleigh, Durham for work a few years ago and been to a few other places there, too, but please don’t ask me the names. I travelled a lot! Great food and even better welcome. I have a Kindle and my last book was set in England.

  3. I write what I know too….a couple of my books are set in small cities, just like where I grew up- Buffalo, NY. It’s a place where you have the perks of city life with the friendliness of small towns.

  6. Love Kindle format. Last book read, Jennifer Johnson Is Sick of Being Married by Heather McElhatton, was set in Minnesota after a hysterical honeymoon in a gated Christian resort in the Virgin Islands – complete with curfews, alcohol-free drinks, and FOOD POISONING.

I can’t wait to pick up a copy of one of your books, Holley! I love small town stories, but it’s been so long since I read one. And there is a definite sense of warmth that you get when you read Southern literature. And when you visit the areas. :-) I like Kindle and the last book I read was set in San Diego – What the Dog Ate by Jackie Bouchard. Thanks so much for participating in the hop!!

Hi, Holley! I had a blast visiting your site today. I guess I prefer Kindle now that I have an iPad–hope I win. Funny thing, my novel is set at a “not-so-fictional” university, too. Oh, and the last novel I read, A STATE OF JANE, was set in NYC–Meredith Schorr’s hometown.

  9. livrancourt says:

Now I was born in NC but Dad was in the Coast Guard so we moved on, and I haven’t been back since I was a kid.It would be fun to travel through your books! And, since the novel I’m reading now is set in Hell, it would be a nice change of pace.

There’s no place like home! It’s funny how we always return there. It’s as if were all trying to come full circle in our mind.

What a fun blog hop. I’m enjoying all of the posts and this chance to learn about new writers.

  12. Nancy S says:

Would that secretive area be around Durham? Been there. The last book I finished was set in Montana and I just started one set in Louisiana.

  13. Celina K says:

We considered moving there for a short while. I think it would be too warm for me though! I prefer kindle format, and the last book I read was set in Hawii.

  16. Marlena Fein says:

I have not been to North Carolina. I bet it is quite lovely. You know, I don’t think a location was mentioned in the last book I read or really any recent ones. If it was, it was just a casual mention with no elaboration. Hmmm now I will be looking to see where each book is set. I would love mobi format if I were to win.

    Best wishes,
    Marlena
